The Thermometer at the Carriage House
We don't know exactly how cold it got at the Carriage House on December 8.
It was so cold the fluid in the thermometer huddled down into the bulb
below the lowest mark of −30°F.
The Carriage House is about 80 feet lower in elevation than the Main
House and sits at the confluence of two gullies,
so on calm days the cold air flows down and makes it much colder than
the Main House,
which sits on a slight ridge.
The Main House registered −22.6°F.
We often see temperatures 10°F lower at the Carriage House on cold,
calm days.
On those days,
it can be another 8°F colder at the bottom of the drive,
300 feet lower.
